Craft beer, with a side of yoga

Yoga and craft beer

Some (many) of us do not have the natural inclination to run on a treadmill, or to lift heavy objects and then set them back down, only to pick them back up again. So, having a little incentive now and again to get off the couch and exercise is always welcome. My willpower only takes me so far, and, luckily for me, a few breweries around town have answered the call and put together the perfect combination: yoga + beer.

I recently joined some friends for a yoga and beer event at Utepils brewery and felt accomplished on what otherwise would have been just another lazy Sunday. We pushed aside the tables and chairs in the taproom, laid out our mats and practiced yoga for an hour before we lined up at the bar for a pint. Nothing quite like a little refreshment after a workout (granted, the yoga wasn’t exceptionally intense but still there was some movement).

Even if you’ve never taken a yoga class before you have nothing to worry about – the class was easy to follow, and you could move at your own pace, customizing any move to your comfort level. Certainly the best part (in my opinion) is relaxing afterwards and rewarding yourself with a tasty beer and good company. Here are a few breweries where you can enjoy some yoga and beer.

Yoga and craft beer

Lake Monster Brewing

Starting April 28th, comeevery Saturday and Sunday at 10:30am for yoga and a pint at Lake Monster Brewing. No experience necessary, and no reservations needed: Just show up with your own mat and enjoy an hour-long class of perfecting your yoga poses with a delicious pint afterwards. Lake Monster’s classic beers include Empty Rowboat IPA, Calhoun Claw Pilsner, Buddy Check Session IPA, and Last Fathom Dark Lager. Cost is $15 for the class and beer.

Utepils

Located right in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, Utepils offers an hour of Sunday yoga in their taproom every week. For $10 you can start your morning feeling good with some exercise and then treat yourself for all your efforts with some tasty beer after. And if you’re not much of a beer drinker, you can choose to have their delicious kombucha on tap instead. The yoga starts at 10:45, with all levels of experience welcome. There’s no registration, simply put on your stretchy pants and be sure to bring your own mat.

Excelsior Brewing Company

Excelsior Brewing Company brings you the IPA and namaste. You’re promised “an hour of breathing, twisting, and movement [that] will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the day.” Sounds good to me. The class lasts an hour and welcomes yogis of all levels. The yoga commences at 11:00am, but arrive a little earlier, between 10:30-10:45, to check in and scope out a good spot. It’s $14 for the class, which includes your choice of one of Excelsior’s tasty beers. And, again, be sure to bring your own mat.

Urban Growler Brewing Co.

Presenting an evening of ‘Bend and Brew Yoga’. While this event only happens once a month, this is a great way to unwind at the end your week with a relaxing evening of yoga and craft beers. Select Fridays from 5:00-7:00PM join yoga instructor Melissa Joy Schoeller for some vinyasa style yoga that is perfect for all experience levels. The cost is $20 that includes both the class, a pint, good music, and good company.
