On Friday September 15th, shovel met ground in a symbolic ceremony of breaking ground for Digi-Key’s coming expansion in Thief River Falls. Governor Mark Dayton and Shawntera Hardy, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), were present along with leadership from Digi-Key.
The project will come in at $200 million, resulting in a 1 million square foot expansion adjacent to the company’s current facility. Digi-Key currently employs 3,200 people and the project will add another 1,000 positions over the course of the next 10 years. Project construction is expected to be complete sometime in 2021.
Governor Dayton was happy with the companies planned expansion. He had this to say about the project and the company; “I am deeply grateful to Digi-Key for its continuing commitment to Thief River Falls and our state. I congratulate the company for breaking ground on its new expansion, and thank its leadership for undertaking this project in Thief River Falls. Digi-Key is one of Minnesota’s greatest success stories.”
During the 2017 legislative session, Digi-Key received a sales tax exemption through the Greater Minnesota Job Expansion Program. Digi-Key received a sales tax exemption for $5 million per year, totaling $40 million.
DEED Commissioner Hardy was happy with the project as well, saying, “The investment Digi-Key has made in our state will be felt by people in northwestern Minnesota for generations to come. I applaud Digi-Key for their decision to expand in their home state of Minnesota, and look forward to seeing this innovative company continue to grow.”
